Therapy Burn Out Is Real — And You’re Not Doing It Wrong
Share
Let’s Talk About Therapy Fatigue
If your child has a disability, rare or undiagnosed condition, you probably know what therapy life looks like: early intervention, speech, OT, physio, hydro, maybe psychology. It can be a full-time job — and not just for your child.
What no one warns you about? The emotional cost of constantly working on goals. The missed moments. The exhaustion. The guilt when you just want to skip one more appointment.
We’ve Been There
When our son Lloyd was little, we said yes to everything. We were grateful, motivated — and scared of missing something that could help him. But after months of back-to-back sessions, I was burnt out. And so was he.
Some weeks, we felt like we were chasing checklists instead of enjoying childhood. His. And ours, as parents.
What Helped Us
- Choosing quality over quantity: We focused on the therapies Lloyd enjoyed and where we saw emotional or physical gains, not just what “looked good on paper.”
- Taking intentional breaks: It felt counterintuitive, but rest is essential. We made space to just be a family.
- Listening to our child: If Lloyd was clearly over it, we adjusted. Not everything has to be hard to be helpful.
There’s No Gold Medal for Doing Everything
The truth is: you can advocate fiercely, love deeply, and still say “not this term” to therapy. That doesn’t mean you’re giving up — it means you’re pacing for the long road.
Because rare, undiagnosed and complex journeys aren’t sprints. They’re marathons.
What We Want You to Know
If you're reading this after cancelling an appointment or feeling like you're not doing enough — stop. You're doing great. You’re doing enough. And more importantly, your child is not a project. They are a person. A loved, worthy, beautifully unique person — whether or not they can grasp a crayon or stand unaided.
